Mixing and Storing Pesticides

Proper mixing and storage of pesticides is necessary in order to use them safely and to their full benefit.

Mixing pesticides: Always read the label carefully before mixing pesticides. Mix pesticides according to label directions. Keep a special set of measuring spoons, cups, stirring rods, and other tools to be used only for mixing and measuring pesticides. Make sure mixing and spraying utensils are clean before using them. Mix only the amount needed for the job. Protect your skin from contact with pesticides by wearing clothing that covers your arms and legs. Wear goggles and a cap to protect your head and face if the label carries a warning or danger cautionary word. Wash your hands and face and any other area that may have come in contact with the pesticide with soap and water. Immediately remove clothes that have been contaminated with pesticide. Wash them in a strong detergent before wearing them again.

Storing chemicals: Always keep pesticides in their original containers. Do not remove the labels, and keep the containers securely capped. Pesticide storage shelves should be strong, stable, and not too high to reach easily, although they should be out of the reach of children. Do not store pesticides near food. Pesticides are best stored in a locked, well-ventilated space, out of the sun and away from pilot lights and other open flames or sparks, since the fumes may be flammable. Keep the pesticides dry and do not let liquid pesticides freeze.
